Green Day's "American Idiot" hits Great White Way

NEW YORK (Billboard) - It's the evening of Thursday, April 1, and, no foolin', Broadway's St. James Theatre is packed. Previews of the musical "American Idiot" started little more than a week ago in anticipation of an April 20 opening, and the theatre has been close to capacity every night.

Onstage, faded rock posters and multiple TV screens provide the backdrop for 95 minutes of singing, dancing and Green Day songs. The plot centres on three young men trying to escape dead-end suburban lives. Will fails to get in gear even when his girlfriend falls pregnant; the other two "succeed," in a manner of speaking. Tunny winds up being seduced by a flashy military recruiter, goes to war and promptly loses a leg and gains a nurse to love. The other, the Jesus of Suburbia on 2004's "American Idiot" album, renamed Johnny, picks up a dope habit and girlfriend, loses the latter because of the former and winds up right back where he started. He comes home, along with his friends, emboldened with a new sense of personal responsibility.

The story contains almost no spoken dialogue -- instead, it's told mostly through songs from "American Idiot" and its 2009 follow-up album, "21st Century Breakdown." There's a band onstage, and though the songs' arrangements are fuller and richer as adapted for the theatre, they retain the scrappy quality of the originals.

The ending isn't exactly a happy one, but it's not "King Lear," either, at least according to Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong.

"The characters all made mistakes and learned lessons," he says. "It's still the beginning of a journey for them. For Johnny, he doesn't blame everything on his parents or society anymore, and he can move forward."

While the show tells the story of Johnny's transition, it also represents the maturation of Green Day. When the band first broke out of the Bay Area with snotty three-chord punk in the early '90s, the last place anyone would expect to see it would be on the Great White Way. But as "American Idiot" demonstrates, things rarely turn out the way you think they will.

Jake Gyllenhaal calls 'Prince of Persia' role 'awesome'

Jake Gyllenhaal says it's "awesome" he is starring in 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' - because he is a huge fan of the original video game.

The actor portrays hero Dastan in the upcoming action movie - which has been written by the game's creator Jordan Mechner - and admits he is struggling to comprehend the fact he is playing the big-screen version of one of his digital childhood heroes.

The 29-year-old star said: "I played the original side-scrolling version of the game when I was a kid. And then I took a little hiatus.

"I was actually kind of tripping out on that with Jordan the other day. I was saying to him, 'Who knew when I was playing it - after I closed out 'Oregon Trail' and went over to my 'Prince of Persia' game when I was I don't know how old, maybe eight or something - who knew I would be playing the Prince of Persia?' It's kind of awesome."

Jake insists the movie will be better than any other video game adaptation because so much care has been taken with scripting the action scenes.

He explained to MTV News: "The reason why most video games movies haven't been successful up until now is the fact that most of the action that takes place is stuff that we've seen before [in the game], but hasn't had a reason in the story line that makes sense.

"So, in this movie we decided that everything the prince did in the movie had to have a reason. If he were going to jump on a wall and run over to get away from somebody, or he's going to jump from building to building, there had to be an obstacle. It had to be based on something that he had learned, or based in the story line.

"Most of the time you just see really cool stunts and people doing really cool things, but you don't know why. Our action all ties back into the ultimate story."

Career rebound for Winana? Actress lands key role in Ron Howard-directed, Vince Vaughn-starring comedy

Looks like Winona Ryder is launching her own comeback story. The ’80s icon has landed a leading role in the Ron Howard-directed film, previously called Cheaters, starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. Sources tell EW.com that Ryder beat out a slew of other actresses in her drive to land the part of Geneva, Kevin James’ wife. She auditioned twice for the part, outshining the likes of Kate Beckinsale, Carla Gugino and Uma Thurman, who flew herself in for the audition.

Why is the role so coveted? Well it turns out the film is no tried-and-true fat guy/hot wife comedy. Rather, the movie, from screenwriter Allan Loeb (21), centers on two best friends, played by James and Vaughn. When Vaughn’s character discovers that James’ wife (Ryder) has cheated on his best friend, he confronts her directly and must decide whether or not he will tell his friend. (Thus, the film often pits Ryder’s character opposite Vaughn’s.) The movie is set to begin filming in Chicago in May.

Ryder, who recently wrapped Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan starring Natalie Portman, can next be seen in the CBS mini-series When Love is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story, a period piece that depicts the story of the woman who co-founded Al-Anon. She stars opposite Berry Pepper. It premieres April 25.

Source: Charlie Sheen wants to bow out of sitcom

LOS ANGELES – Charlie Sheen is looking at a future without "Two and a Half Men."

According to a person close to the actor, Sheen has told friends that he wants to leave the hit CBS comedy in which he's starred for seven years.

The person spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because Sheen had made the remarks in private and had not intended them to be discussed publicly.

CBS had no comment, spokesman Phil Gonzales said Thursday. An after-hours call to Sheen's representatives was not immediately returned.

"Two and a Half Men," which also stars Jon Cryer, is the top-rated comedy on TV and a key part of CBS' Monday night lineup. Last year, CBS gave the show a three-year renewal, through the 2011-12 season, but Sheen's contract is up at the end of the current season.

Sheen, 44, has tired of the demands of a weekly show and wants to focus on movies, the person close to him said. Sheen is in the upcoming film "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," a sequel to the 1987 "Wall Street" in which he starred.

Sheen's desire to exit the sitcom was reported by People magazine online Thursday.

The actor is grappling with legal problems arising from a fight with his wife in Aspen, Colo., last December. He is charged with assault, criminal mischief and menacing, which carries a possible sentence of one to three years in prison.

Sheen pleaded not guilty in Colorado's Pitkin County District Court last month and faces a jury trial in July.

He entered a rehab facility for undisclosed treatment in February, temporarily forcing "Two and a Half Men" to halt production.

CBS and series producer Warner Bros. Television issued a statement of support when Sheen sought treatment and wished him well.
